Dream BIG… You’re not alone

August 19th, 2010

The summer is winding down.

We’ve had a record number of 90+ degree days
here in New York City. It gets especially hot here
in Manhattan where you have a lot of tall buildings
that block any breeze so you have the sweltering sun
just beating down on you.

It’s hot and muggy and humid and God help you
if you don’t have air-conditioning. Fortunately, we
have Central Park, acres and acres of tall shady trees,
green grass and no cars. It’s a great place to hang out.

If you walk about a half mile going west, to the end, you
have the Mighty Hudson River where Christopher Columbus
sailed. And all along the Hudson, you have green grass and
trees and a cool breeze that continually blows off the river.

A perfect place to cool off, relax, throw a picnic or just
enjoy the view. Most outsiders and foreigners don’t think
of these things when they think about New York City.

They think about the hustle and bustle of Wall Street
or the theatre district, 42nd Street or the jewelry district
around 49th St and 5th Ave. But remember, Manhattan
is an island, surrounded on all four sides by water.

So, no matter where you are, uptown, downtown, east or
west, there is always a great body of water not that far away.
Great places to relax, throw a picnic and just enjoy the beauty.

If you’re stressing out because your websites aren’t bringing
in the visitors you expected, or your email campaign flops,
or you’re not making any sales and no money is coming in…

You’re Not Alone!

That’s what most people trying to make a fortune on the
internet are going through. If you’re anything like me, and
get a couple hundred emails per day from what seems like
every marketer on the planet… STOP.

If it seems like everyone is making money except YOU… STOP!
You’re not alone. There are a couple dozen or maybe a few
dozen people making a boatload of money.

You hear from them every day, you get their emails everyday.
You start to think you’re the only one NOT making money.
But the reality is…

Millions of Internet Marketing Wannabes ain’t making a dime.

You’re not alone. You’re in the majority. I know that doesn’t
make you feel any better, but it gives you a better perspective.
Don’t give up your hopes and dreams… Dream Big!

But have a backup plan in case the dream is taking too long.

Witness to History - Again!

December 12th, 2007

Last year in December, I was on my way to the bank
when I witnessed history in the making.

The streets were cordoned off by police and thousands
and thousands of people of all races and nationalities
were flooding the streets.

My bank is on the same block as the Apollo Theater
in Harlem, New York city. I witnessed thousands who
came out to pay respects to the late James Brown,
The “Godfather of Soul” music.

James Brown’s body, had been placed in a gold casket,
and was being driven through the streets of New York City
to the Apollo Theater in a white, glass-encased
horse-drawn carriage.

It was a magnificent sight to behold.
I was a witness to history.

On Monday, I was a lucky witness to history, again.
I was out for a walk, coming over the Madison Ave Bridge
which stretches from the Bronx and into Manhattan.

I love to walk over the bridge. Off to one side of the bridge
you can see the “House that Ruth Built” - Yankee Stadium
(now partially obscured by the construction of the new
Yankee Stadium).

Off to the other side of the bridge, you get a sweeping panoramic
vista of New York City and an unobstructed view of the mighty
Empire State Building, a truly spectacular sight.

As I come off the bridge I can see across the street,
in front of the Chase bank, about 5 police cars blocking off
the street and a crowd of onlookers.

My first thought was that the bank must have just been robbed
and I started to cross the street, wanting to stay out of the way
of any potential trouble. But my curiosity got the better of me
and I ambled into the crowd to see what was going on.

Standing in front of the bank was none other then Congressman
Charles B Rangel
, (Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means
and Chairman of the Board of the Democratic Congressional
Campaign Committee).

Congressman Rangel is the principal author of the five billion dollar
Federal Empowerment Zone demonstration project to revitalize
urban neighborhoods throughout America.

At his side was the Honorable Percy E Sutton.
(As a lawyer Percy Sutton seized his place in American
history by fighting for civil rights with the NAACP
and as the council for Malcolm X).

Sutton, in the late 60’s was The Manhattan Borough President.
He co-founded the Inner City Broadcasting Corporation,
which purchased WLIB-AM redio, making it the first
Black-owned station in New York City.

Sutton was a member of the delegation of leading American
business people selected by U.S. Secretary of Commerce
Ron Brown to represent the United States at the G-7
round table meeting on Telecommunications and High Technology.

Percy Sutton was also the responsible party for the refurbishing
and reopening the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Congressman Rangel was making a speech and announcing
to the world an historic event… 5th Ave at 135th Street was
being renamed “Honorable Percy E Sutton Way”.

A Black Man having a street named after him on prestigious
5th Ave in New York City - an historic moment.
Once again I was a lucky witness to history in the making.

UPS - (Unlimited Parking Summons’)

October 22nd, 2007

The Upper East Side of New York City in the borough of Manhattan
is where I have been delivering packages for UPS for the last 5 years.

I drive down beautiful 5th Avenue by Central Park.
It’s a very wealthy area (some residents are paying as much as
$30,000/month to live). I deliver packages to many of the rich and famous
including Woody Allen, Michael J Fox, Paul Newman, Katie Couric
and many others, including the Mayor himself… Mike Bloomberg..

Manhattan is a small island with 8 million residents and it seems like
just as many cars. There is literally no place to legally park so I have to
double park. I quickly run into the building, deliver the package
and get back to the truck before I get a parking ticket.

My job is to deliver our premium early morning packages.
Generally there are just a couple packages per building and the doorman signs
for the packages so I’m usually not double parked for more than a minute or two.

It’s in and out of the building quick as a ninja, and back to the truck.
I’ve been on the same route for the last 5 years. Usually, I didn’t get many parking
tickets, maybe one or two per month. Sometimes I might go as long as two months
without a single parking ticket. And I never got tickets when I worked on a Saturday.

But about 2 years age, that began to change. Instead of one or two parking tickets
per month, I started getting one or two per week. Over the last year that has now
escalated to one or two tickets per day.

And instead of Never getting tickets on Saturday, I get a ticket EVERY Saturday.
Same route, same streets, same time - The only variable is the amount of tickets.

Last Friday, I hit a new record high (or record low, depending on your point of view).
5 parking tickets in 1 hour. FIVE! …In One Hour! …Written by 5 different traffic cops.
(And at $115 bucks a pop, that ain’t cheap - $575 bucks in tickets in an hour).

Here’s what happened. I returned to my truck within 2 minutes of double parking it,
and there was a traffic enforcement agent, in the middle of writing my third parking
ticket for that day. I recognized the cop because he has written me many tickets
in the past and we chat every now and then.

When he saw me coming he said to me, “I love seeing UPS trucks. It’s an easy ticket
to write because you guys don’t argue with us and give us a hard time”.

I move on and continue delivering packages. About 10 minutes later, I come out of
a building and there is a female cop writing me ticket #4. I pick up the other 3 tickets,
show them to her and say to her, This is a new record, 4 tickets in less than an hour.

She apologetically says to me, I’m sorry. I didn’t know. You should have said something.
Or you should have at least put the tickets on the front of the truck so we could see them.
I said Thanks for the tip. I think I’ll try that.

So I go to the next stop, but this time I have the 4 tickets visibly displayed on the front
of the truck, tucked in by the windshield. I exit the building and to my suprise,
another traffic violations specialist is writing me ticket #5.

I guess he didn’t want anyone to see the inordinate amount of tickets I had,
so he picked up the other 4 tickets and folded them all together along with ticket #5,
so that it only looked like one ticket.

C’mon Mayor Bloomberg - Give UPS a break!

Tell your boss - “Take this Job and Shove it!”
Make MONEY using Web 2.0 traffic strategies…
