A Stroke ain’t no Joke - Update
In the last post, I commented on a comment I received from Joan
about what to do if a person is having a stroke.
Joan said I should take the misinformation down and sent me
a link to verify and confirm her reasons why.
Well, it turns out she was absolutely correct.
Thank You Joan for the new information.
Here is a summary of what she sent…
Each year an estimated 600,000 Americans experience strokes.
A stroke is an interruption of the blood supply to any part
of the brain. This results in damaged brain tissue and a killing
off of part of the brain.
The brain is an extremely complex organ that controls various body functions.
If a stroke occurs and blood flow can’t reach the region that controls
a particular body function, that part of the body won’t work as it should.
Often the person is left with lifelong debilitating infirmities
such as slurry speech, unilateral facial droop, blurred vision
dis-coordination of movement and even thought.
If you’ve ever listened to Howard Stern and heard “Crackhead Bob”
you know what I mean. Bob (not his real name) took the name Bob
because he couldn’t pronounce his name anymore after he had a stroke.
How to Recognize a Stroke
This might be a lifesaver if you can remember the following advice.
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
A stroke victim may suffer permanent brain damage when people fail to
recognize what’s happening. Now, doctors say any bystander can recognize
a stroke, simply by asking 3 questions…
1) Ask the person to speak a simple sentence
2) Ask the person to smile
3) Ask the person to raise both arms
If the person has trouble with any of these tasks, call 911 immediately.
Describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. Widespread use of this test could
result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of a stroke and prevent permanent,
irreversible brain damage.
The warning signs of a stroke are:
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden numbness of the face, arm or leg
(especially on one side of the body).
With regard to pricking fingers and earlobes to get them bleeding…
DON”T BOTHER. It will do no nothing to aid the stroke victim.
Call 911 and GET THEM TO THE HOSPITAL… ASAP!
